Rally your troops for emotional and physical support while you are downsizing and moving.
Downsizing and moving is hard work. It is physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing, and you must find ways to take care of yourself throughout the process. In fact, it is so important that I encourage my clients to build it into their master plan.
Typically, caring for yourself while downsizing and moving falls into one of three categories. It is essential to have aspects of all three in each phase of the process:
Connecting with friends and family throughout the process.
Doing nice things for yourself.
Getting help.
The biggest piece of advice I give my clients is: Don't do it alone.
You might be one of those people who is action oriented and high energy and for whom sorting and packing is a delight. Or you could be great at all the pre-planning and logistical stuff, but might need the supportive motivation of a friend when it comes to actually putting things in boxes. Perhaps you have all this enthusiasm for the next chapter, but get overwhelmed with details and lists. Or maybe you discover that you are more focused working by yourself but you love it when friends help give you a break and meet you out of the house for tea or a walk.
Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are in this process and get the help where you need it.
Downsizing and moving is tiring work and it is likely to bring up lots of fears and emotions, even if you are excited about your move. Find ways to get the personal and professional support needed to bring ease to the process.
